The Parish of Bedhampton - St Thomas Church and St Nicholas Church Centre

The Interregnum

It's not our first, and it won't be our last!
It's the time, literally, "between reigns", and it's the time between John Risdon leaving to start his retirement and our new Rector taking the helm.

What's happening?

Those working in the private sector are used to the idea that as soon as someone's retirement date is fixed, their job is advertised internally within days and externally within weeks. The new recruit quite often can be in post in time to participate in a structured handover.

Not so in the Church of England, although there is a well-trodden path to follow. Here is the briefest of progress reports to keep us in the picture...

Progress so far

√ 24th November - PCC meeting with the Archdeacon
√ 3rd December - meeting with the Area Dean and appointment of our "Parish Representatives" (Sandra Matthews & Margaret Harckham)
√ 29th January - publication of our Parish Profile here on the website for prospective candidates to peruse at leisure
√ 29th January - advertisements in the Church Times and Church of England Newspaper
√ 1st February - this page uploaded. 68 copies of the Parish Profile have been downloaded. Parish Profile now also appears on the Diocesan Website

What's next?

* soon - interested candidates apply on a Common Application form
* soon - Diocesan staff produce a shortlist of those who best match our Parish Profile
* 23rd March - interviews with the best candidates (a 2-day process)

And then...

* Offer the post to the best person
* Receive acceptance by the best person
* If no-one is suitable, or the best candidate does not accept the offer, we go back round again...
* Our "Rector-to-be" must then resign from their current post - the PCC there will groan and start their own process...
* After working out notice, moving in and drawing breath, our new Rector has an Induction Service and we have the end of our Interregnum...

If all goes to plan, and there's an ideal candidate who wants to live and work here (and it is rather a nice place to live and work!), we're hoping that the final tick on this page will take place in the Summer of 2010. But of course, it's much more important to get the right person than it is to get a Rector by the Summer.

As news emerges, we will update this page.
